Crazy or Brave Episode 6: Find Inspiration in Every Conversation
A million years ago, when I was in grade school, I came home one day and was telling my mom how boring school was. “All the teachers do is talk all day. And when they aren’t talking they ask us to sit quietly until the bell rings” I said. “Why can’t we learn stuff by doing more?”
My mom looked at me and laughed and said “When life seems boring, which it will a lot, listen to what people are saying, or look around the room and find something new, something that can inspire you and make the time go by.”
Back then it sounded like a standard mom answer :-) But today I realize that piece of advice has actually helped share my career in ways I never thought possible.
It happens to all of us, all of the time. On airplanes, as soon as the safety announcements go live, over 50% of the plane tune’s out.
In business, people can drone on forever about updated and things that don’t seem to matter to us. Friends can talk tirelessly about topics that we have no interest in. And, sometimes, even our most favorite person can sometime sound like that teacher voice from Charlie Brown.
